Summer Learning Journey | Tangram Tangles

For this Summer Learning Journey activity, I have done the tangram tangles, and choosing an image that represented summer. In this activity I decided to do three images which were a friend, football, and a cat. The reason why I did a friend, was because when I go to the beach, or park, or just playing tag, it means that summer is on the way. The second image which is someone playing football, is because even though in some countries, it is a winter sports, in New Zealand, there are usually football games in the summer, or even playing in the beach, or park, or just in your front/back yard. The third image I chose was a cat, because I usually see them laying down on top of roofs, or somewhere that has sun on, which shows that we are in the summer season.

I found this activity a bit hard because, I needed to think first where the shapes went, before putting them in.

Summer Learning Journey | Rainbow collage template

For this next Summer Learning Journey activity, I have done the step it up. It is inspired by the story of Nanny Mihi and the rainbow, who her grandkids make a rainbow using all the things they found at the beach (like shell, flowers, sea creatures).

In my creation, I decided to have the colour at the back overlapping one another, then adding an object for example flowers, fruits, leaves, and bubbles.

I enjoyed doing this activity because I always love making collages with photos, png pictures and bundling them together or overlapping them to make a great image.

Summer Learning Journey | Escape Room

For this Summer Learning Journey activity, I have created an escape room using Google Draw and Google Forms. (Since it is my first time using Google Forms, I am not fully clear about how to do this, but I have tried it out myself, so hopefully it works fine). I added a few maths questions which is what allows us to figure out what the code is.

I found this activity hard but also fun because while I tried out the example, it gave me a couple of ideas to do the escape room game.

Can you guess where we are going with these items?

Summer Learning Journey | Math Riddles Questions

In this next Summer Learning Journey activity, I have done the Maths Riddles. Our of the 5 riddles I tried out, I got 2 wrong which was how many squares there were and how many times can I subtract 10 from 50. Out of the 5 riddles I tried out from this slide, I got 2 wrong which were, how many total squares there were, and how many times I could subtract 10 from 50.

Are you good at riddles?

Summer Learning Journey | Design your own Surfboard!

In this Summer Learning Journey activity, I have designed my own surfboard which is based on the ocean with fishes. The blue swirl in the middle is the vortex that happens in the ocean, as well as the fish which swims around it with hundreds of air bubbles rising up fast to the surface.

A couple of facts I learnt while doing this activity were how easy and fun it was to do but also gives you a variety of designs and symbols to choose from, like the having sea creatures, waves, summer themed things, etc. I have also learnt the reason why surfers put wax on their boards, are to give you tighter grip on your feet while on board, which reduces slipping off from the currents.

I enjoyed doing this activity because usually I see surfboards with no patterns but with just plain colours, but doing this activity allowed my digital activity to come in, and design a summer themed item.

What kind of designs would you have on your very own surfboard?

Summer Learning Journey | Art for Arts Sake

For this Summer Learning Journey Activity, I have drew my younger self as a Silhouette. A Silhouette is a type of art which is a profile of a black and white background to represent someone. This art was created by Etienne De Silhouette, and as you can tell from the name, the art was named after him, Silhouette.

You can try out this activity by taking a side profile picture of yourself or one of your family members, then tracing the outline of the image and colouring it in black, then cutting the image, and then pasting on it on a white paper /OR if you want to try it on a Google Draw, repeat the same process.

I enjoyed doing this activity because art is usually about having the same details as the reference, good blendings, or choosing the right colours but this activity doesn’t need any detail, and is hard to identify who the person is, which can challenge others to find out more about who the person is.

Summer Learning Journey | One-Line Artwork

For this next Summer Learning Journey activity I have done the kick start one line art challenge, which was a rose, using three colours, black for the outline, red for the pedals, and the green for the leaf. I decided to search up one line art and decided to do a rose because it was one of the drawing that looked a bit challenging. Next time to make it more challenging I might draw a forest just using one line, with 5 colours.

I enjoyed doing this activity because I am always use to drawing with many lines, but doing this challenge gave me something to improve to, and try more often.

Summer Learning Journey | Explore Levers and Catapults

Today I have completed another Summer Learning Journey activity for week 2. The Summer Learning Journey is a program that helps students keep learning throughout the Summer holidays.

For this collaborative activity, I needed to create a seesaw out of objects from our toolbox to use it to catapult objects. I first watched the videos so I can watch the instructions that will help me create a seesaw. I then started making the seesaw using, blu-tack, string, spoon, and a tube. I was able to create this seesaw successfully and catapult different objects.

I found this activity fun because I was able to learn new things in the science by creating something fun.

Summer Learning Journey | Recreating Famous Portraits

For this Summer Learning Journey activity I have done the step it up challenge, which was to write 3 reasons why this challenge might have been successfully (especially during lockdown).

I enjoyed doing this activity because looking through many people’s art recreations, it was interesting to see what products they used and the art they have used for inspiration.

Summer Learning Journey | It’s Cool to be Kind!

This Summer Learning Journey activity I have done today which is commenting on a persons SLJ’s blog post. In a quality comment, we first need to greet them (e.g. Greetings, hello or you can use your cultural greeting). Next you would need to write something thoughtful about their work they have published, and after that you can ask a question or give feed back to them, to help improve their work.

I have commented on Te Raumati’s grand design blog post. You can visit her blog here: https://pbsteraumatis.edublogs.org/2022/12/17/summer-learning-journey-week-1-activity-9-grand-design/
