Evolution of Transportation

LI: To identify how technology has changed when we consider how it was fit for purpose.

Today we were looking at the change of technology. Over the past 100 years, technology has changed in order to make things easier. This is called fit for purpose. Transportation devices have become more convenient compared to their initial design.

Fit for purpose is when something is useful. For example, land transport, a car. Since cars are vehicles that transport goods, people, and go long distances, it wouldn’t be fit for purpose if it was broken, and didn’t work at all.

I enjoyed doing this activity because its was interesting to see which cars were fit for purpose when it was driven many years ago.

An interesting fact I learned during this activity was how much more things got much more better these days, and with better technology.

Attempt New Things & Ask for Help

LI: Students will learn that it’s okay to try new things and to ask for help when needed.

For PB4L, we are reminding ourselves why it is important to attempt to do new things and to ask for help. This session encourages students and people so that they can continue doing what they find interest in or so they can improve their academic performance.

It is important to attempt new things because you can identify which activites you find enjoyable and which are not your hobby.

It is important to ask for help because the problem will be stuck in your head and you won’t get ahead.

I enjoyed doing this task because its important to know these skills to help you with your learning, and to try new things even if you don’t think you can do it.

Match Girls Strike of 1888

LI: To identify the significance of the Match Girls Strike of 1888.

Today we had a session with David, our PB4L leader. He was teaching us about the match girls strike of 1888. This Strike of 1888 explains the hardships that the match girls went through, this eventually led to a protest trying to raise awareness for women who don’t get appreciate their hard work by not getting paid.

I enjoyed doing this activity because in the 1888 and back, women were looked down because they weren’t men.

An interesting fact I learnt during this activity was how the yellow phosphorus could damage someones face which would be devastating and how there were people who died from this disease.

Firework Provocation

LI: to consider both sides of the story.

This week for reading, we have been carrying on with our provocation on fireworks. Before doing this activity we researched about the good and bad facts of the fireworks, and did the extended discussion with our group to state our opinion, to agree or disagree with our statement. Out of the best reasons we have heard from the conversation, we put it on a T-Chart. Fromt this, we looked at both sides of the story and decided on if fireworks should be kept or banned in our modern day celebrations. In this DLO we gave evidence to the damages caused by this event and the enjoyable side of the story, and stated our informed opinion on if fireworks should be banned or not.

I enjoyed doing this activity because listening to others ideas made me rethink about my opinion on fireworks.

Formal and Informal Language

LI: identify the style of a piece of text informal/formal.

This week for writing we have been learning about the formal and informal languages and the ways we use them by. Before we created this DLO, we changed informal text to formal using our skills we have (e.g. give me my money back is informal, so it could be changed to I would appreciate it if you could receive my money back).

In this ativity we gave examples of what could be used in formal and informal. I think it is important to know what should be in both texts, as we wouldn’t want to write it informally in an important email.

I enjoyed doing this activity because it helped me to identify how we can identify each formal and informal language.

CARE Awards | Gold Respect

LI:To strengthen my connections to our school CARE values

I am currently working on my Gold Respect badge. To achieve this my challenge is to complete 5 tasks that help me strengthen my connections to the PBS CARE value of Respect. Researching a person who is a well respected Aotearoa leader helps us to know more about them and what challenges they have come across. My challenge in this task was to complete a presentation on a respected Aotearoa leader. I created this DLO to show my understanding of the task.

I enjoyed doing this activity because learning more about a person who has shown respect to New Zealand, gives me pride, since they are representing a country not many people know about and also where I live.

CARE Awards | Gold Respect

LI:To strengthen my connections to our school CARE values

I am currently working on my Gold Respect badge. To achieve this my challenge is to complete 5 tasks that help me strengthen my connections to the PBS CARE value of Respect. Writing this letter helps me show appreciation to the teachers that have taught me to be a great student in my years at school. My challenge in this task was to write a thank you letter to a teacher or other staff member. I created this DLO to show my understanding of the task.

I enjoyed doing this activity because its good to show acknowledgement  to the teacher who taught me for 2 years.

Paper Airplane and Measurement

LI: To design and make a paper plane that will fly the furthest.

Our team challenge was to design an airplane to fly the furthest in the distance. We analysed our data of the paper air planes we flew. The planes we designed were tie fighter, deltry, the bird, and lastly the dart. Our group designed multiple planes to verify which of the planes flew the best. The plane that went the furthest was the dart. I personally think the dart flew the furthest because of the shape and the point. Lastly we versed group by group and measured the flight distance accurately.

I found this task interesting because sometimes the dart wouldn’t go further than we thought, as the cause might be how we throw it.

Something we could improve on with our plane is having more weight on the plane, because it was pretty light.

2022 Manaiakalani Film Festival

Today the whole of Panmure Bridge School attended the 2022 Manaiakalani Film Festival. This was our 15th annual Film Festival. Our school had 4 showcases from Room 7, Room 5, and 2 videos from Learning Space 1. We also watched 10 other schools films which were awesome! One of my favourite films I saw was PokeBlade because this incorporated Pokemon and BayBlade which are two common animes that people know about. It also paints a bigger picture of how bullying is not acceptable.

I enjoyed watching all these films because it showed how each video represented different topics for others to see.

Transportation

LI: To identify the 4 different modes (types) of transport and their changes over time.

The 4 different modes of transport are air, land, sea and rail. We explored more about the types of transportation and how they have evolved over time to build an understanding of how humanity makes changes to vehicles like cars, boats, trains and planes.

An example of air, land, sea and rail based vehicles are air plane, electric car, sailing boat, and steam trains. Most of the vehicles that are used daily carries goods or people to place.

I found this task interesting because I learnt more about the different types vehicles in each category.
